Solar Panels Godalming: Installers for GU7 and GU8

The most common mistake made about Godalming solar has nothing to do with panels: it is the grid. Surrey is split between two distribution network operators, and plenty of installers assume the whole county is UK Power Networks because most of it is. Godalming is not. Our postcode checks put GU7 in SSEN's Southern region - the same operator as Hampshire - and that matters because the G98 or G99 application goes to the wrong desk otherwise, and because it decides which Octopus export region you are in. On 25 September 2026 that meant Flux paying 29.00p per kWh for exports between 4pm and 7pm here, about 10.08p through the day and 4.74p between 2am and 5am, against a flat 12p on Outgoing Octopus.

On output, be realistic: Godalming is inland and wooded, and the model reflects it. PVGIS 5.3 puts a 4kW unshaded, south-facing array here at about 4,122 kWh a year - noticeably below the Sussex coast, where the same array models at 4,594 kWh in Arundel. East-facing it gives about 3,301 kWh and west-facing 3,266 kWh. Expect roughly 506 kWh in June against 129 kWh in December. Tree shading is the local variable that moves these numbers most, and it is the reason we fit per-panel optimisers here more often than on the coast.

The planning position is better than people fear. The national planning register records the Godalming Town Centre Conservation Area, and no Article 4 direction over it. Without an Article 4 direction, panels on the roof slope of a house inside the conservation area normally keep permitted development under the rules as amended on 27 August 2026. The restrictions that do apply are walls, balconies and roof enclosures fronting a highway, flat-roof arrays needing prior approval, and listed buildings, which sit outside householder rights altogether and need consent checked before any design.

Waverley is expensive housing stock, and that shapes the specification: HM Land Registry put the district average at £553,429 in July 2026, with detached homes at £928,184 and terraced at £422,493. Large detached roofs here take 14 to 16 panels comfortably and a 13.5kWh battery earns its keep against high evening consumption; the Victorian terraces nearer the town centre are a tighter, scaffold-planned job. Godalming is about 33 miles from our Portsmouth base, so Surrey work is planned rather than squeezed between local calls.
