Hampshire · PO6
Solar, battery storage and EV charging in Cosham — designed and installed by a local, MCS-certified team based in Portsmouth.
Quick answer
Cosham (PO6) is part of Portsmouth but sits off Portsea Island at the foot of Portsdown Hill, about 4 miles from our base. Homes here connect through SSEN and we file the G98 or G99 application for you. A 4kW south-facing array in Cosham generates around 3,900–4,200 kWh a year.
Cosham is the part of Portsmouth that most people pass through on the way off the island — the station, the High Street and Queen Alexandra Hospital at the bottom of Portsdown Hill. It was a small village surrounded by fields until the 1920s, and most of the homes we survey here come from the suburban growth that followed, spreading east towards Drayton and west towards Wymering along the lower slopes of the hill.
That history matters for solar. Compared with the tight Victorian terraces further south in Southsea and Fratton, Cosham's semi-detached streets usually give us larger, less interrupted roof slopes and fewer chimneys casting shade. We are based at Victory Business Centre in PO1, so a Cosham survey, install or aftercare visit is a short drive up the M275.
Grid connection (DNO)
Cosham is in the SSEN area, like the rest of Portsmouth. Systems up to 3.68kW per phase are notified under G98 after installation; batteries and larger arrays need G99 approval from SSEN first, and we submit that application for you.

Heritage & conservation
Old Wymering, on Cosham's western side, is Portsmouth City Council's conservation area No. 11. In a conservation area, householder solar loses permitted development only on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure fronting a highway — roof slopes are not restricted — unless an Article 4 direction applies to the street, so we check the property before designing.
Local housing stock
Mainly inter-war and post-war semi-detached housing from the 1920s onwards, when the old village grew into a suburb along the lower slopes of Portsdown Hill, between Drayton to the east and Wymering and Paulsgrove to the west.
Typical roofs
Pitched semi-detached roofs that are generally larger and less interrupted than Portsea Island terraces; on streets rising up the hill the land falls away to the south, and we still model shading roof by roof at the survey.
Sunlight & generation
~1,080 kWh/kWp per year; a 4kW south-facing array ≈ 3,900–4,200 kWh annually

FAQ
Our solar-only packages cover the range most Cosham roofs can take: 8 panels at 3.6kWp from £4,995, 10 panels at 4.5kWp from £5,495 and 14 panels at 6.3kWp from £5,895. Adding a Fox ESS 5.76kWh battery starts from £6,995 with 8 panels, AIKO panels with EcoFlow storage start from £8,418, and the Tesla Powerwall 3 Premium package starts from £12,920 with 12 panels. Every price is "from" and subject to survey, with bird protection mesh included.
The survey is where the design is decided. On streets that climb the lower slopes of Portsdown Hill, the ground falls away to the south, so the houses in front sit lower down; that can help a south-facing roof, but we still check trees, chimneys and dormers on every property. On an east–west roof we can split the panels across both slopes, which spreads generation through the morning and evening and suits a battery.
For a house, solar on the roof is usually permitted development. Old Wymering, on Cosham's western side, is one of Portsmouth City Council's conservation areas. In a conservation area, panels on a house lose permitted development only on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure fronting a highway; the roof slope is not restricted, although a flat-roof array needs prior approval first. If your home is listed, or your street has an Article 4 direction, we check before designing.
Cosham is on SSEN's network like the rest of the city, and anything with a battery needs G99 approval before we fit it. We file the application. Export pays 12p per kWh on Octopus Outgoing Fixed, while Octopus Flux paid 29.00p per kWh between 4pm and 7pm on 16 September 2026, which is why we look at evening usage before sizing a battery. For homes on Portsea Island, including Southsea's terraces, see our page for solar panel installers in Portsmouth.
Yes. Cosham is inside Portsmouth's city boundary, about 4 miles from our base at Victory Business Centre in PO1, so surveys, installs and aftercare visits are short trips for us.
Old Wymering is a conservation area. Panels on the roof slope of a house there are still permitted development; the restriction applies to walls, balconies and roof enclosures fronting a highway, and flat-roof arrays need prior approval. A listed building or an Article 4 direction changes that, so we confirm the position for your property first.
Solar with a Fox ESS 5.76kWh battery starts from £6,995 with 8 panels, AIKO panels with EcoFlow storage from £8,418, and solar with a Tesla Powerwall 3 from £12,920. These are "from" prices, subject to a free survey.
