Grants & export income
For most Isle of Wight homeowners the main ongoing earner is not a grant but the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): an Ofgem-mandated scheme that pays you for surplus solar you export to the grid. As of mid-2026 export tariffs pay roughly 10.5p–16.5p per kWh on the open market — Octopus Outgoing pays 12p, cut from 15p to 12p on 1 March 2026, and the headline 25p-plus rates you may see quoted are either closed to new customers or conditional on buying your system through that supplier — suppliers set and change their own rates, and you can hold your SEG tariff with a different supplier than your import one, provided you have an MCS-certified install and a smart export meter. Upfront grants such as ECO4 and the Warm Homes scheme are means-tested and aimed at low-income or benefits-receiving households in less efficient homes, so most owner-occupiers won't qualify; group-buying schemes like Solar Together occasionally run through local councils but come and go, so treat SEG as the reliable long-term return and any grant as a bonus.
