Large parts of SO23, particularly around the city centre, sit inside conservation areas, and there's a real concentration of listed and period property. That doesn't rule solar out. It shapes it. We specify all-black, low-profile panels that sit tight to the tile line rather than standing proud of it, and wherever the generation numbers still stack up we'll site the array on the rear slope so it isn't visible from the street. On a listed building the conversation has to happen before any design work, and we'll tell you honestly what's likely to be acceptable rather than designing something you then can't put up.
The housing mix across SO22 and SO23 pulls in two directions. SO22, out towards Weeke, Harestock and Stanmore, has more post-war and modern housing — larger, simpler, more predictable roof planes, fewer constraints, and generally the more straightforward installs. SO23 leans older and tighter: Victorian terraces, period cottages, complex roof geometry, and often a smaller usable area than the roof appears to offer from the ground. That's a large part of why we survey properly before quoting anything. The array that fits a Weeke semi is rarely the array that fits a house off Bridge Street.
On the grid side, Winchester falls in SSEN's distribution area, which covers Hampshire along with the Isle of Wight, Dorset and west Surrey.
