A no-hype look at whether home solar is worth it in 2026 for South Coast homeowners, who it suits, who should wait, and how to decide honestly.
It is a reasonable question to ask in 2026, especially after years of changing schemes and noisy marketing. Are solar panels actually worth it now? For most suitable homes on the South Coast, the honest answer is yes, but "worth it" depends on your roof, your energy use and your reasons for considering it. This guide lays out the case both ways so you can decide without anyone leaning on you.
Start with the economics, because that is usually the deciding factor. The numbers in 2026 are more favourable than a few years ago for three reasons. Residential solar carries 0% VAT, which trims the up-front price. Electricity remains expensive, so the savings from using your own generation are substantial. And the Smart Export Guarantee pays you for surplus you export. Together these put most South Coast payback periods in the 7 to 11 year range, after which the system keeps generating for another 15 years or more under warranty.
The South Coast itself tilts the answer towards yes. With Solent irradiance of around 1,050 to 1,150 kWh per kWp, homes here generate more than much of the country. A south-facing roof is ideal, but east-west splits work well too, spreading output across morning and evening, which suits households that are out during the day. If your roof is reasonably unshaded and in good condition, the raw conditions are on your side.
Who is it most worth it for? Households with high daytime electricity use, anyone with an EV to charge, people planning to stay in their home for the medium to long term, and those who want some insulation from future energy price rises. If you run heat pumps, work from home, or have a family at home during the day, you will self-consume more of your generation, which is where the strongest returns come from.
Who should think harder or wait? If your roof is heavily shaded, north-facing only, or due for replacement within a few years, the case weakens and it may be worth re-roofing first. If you are likely to move very soon, you may not see full payback yourself, though solar can still add appeal at sale. And if you are in a conservation area in Chichester, Winchester or Brighton, there may be extra considerations worth checking early, which we are happy to advise on.
There is a non-financial side too, and it matters to a lot of our customers. Generating your own clean electricity reduces your carbon footprint and your reliance on imported, volatile-priced energy. Many homeowners value the resilience and independence as much as the savings, particularly when paired with a battery that keeps essentials running. That is a legitimate reason to install even if pure payback is not your only metric.
A fair word on what worth it does not mean: it does not mean free, and it does not mean instant. Anyone promising guaranteed fixed savings to the pound, or pressuring you to sign today for a "limited" discount, is not giving you the full picture. We are a family-run, MCS-certified installer known for no pushy sales, and our view is that solar should stack up on honest numbers or not at all. If it does not suit your home, we will tell you.
So, is it worth it for you specifically? The only way to know is to look at your roof and your actual usage. Run a quick estimate with our free solar panel calculator to get a feel for the figures, then get a free quote and we will give you a candid assessment, including whether a battery makes sense and what your realistic payback looks like. No hype, just the numbers for your home.
